How can we improve the DL Series?

16 channel recording and playback.

Tittle says it all. How nice would it be to have a virtual sound check. If I play back all the tracks I could set main mix, monitor mix, eqs, etc. loved this with my presonus because I was able to set my band up and record some, then go out into the crowd hit playback and see what needs to be adjusted. It works much better than asking someone how it sounds. This is huge with presonus mixers.

An easy way to playback a recording would be helpful. Recording the mix is a great way to capture front-of-house into a studio-quality sound file. Re-Mixing individual channels of a live recording after the fact is cheating ... using what you learn and applying it to the next gig is a better way to go. Yes, there is stage bleed but minimizing that creates a better blend for the audience across your venue. For a little 16 channel board, thanks Mackie for the price point and capabilities. If you have bigger needs, then the 32 channel board for more than double the price is the way to go. For me, this board has been amazing and the ability to record amazing. Hey, how about a way to record audience response without putting a microphone in the crowd!? Just joking. <PlayBack> button is all I want!

OK, so the basic deal is this:

the iPad is just a big remote control, the mixer does all the work. Thing is, it's doing this work quite digitally.

Asking the iPad to route and store all that data is probably asking a bit much.

        But there is another way.

If that box had either a SATA port or was able to store the audio data over LAN onto a hard drive somewhere on the network, then this would be entirely possible.

It would be ideal if by default that such hardware with Ethernet ports should be able to at least stream multichannel audio in both directions, so you'd just bolt on a recorder box via the LAN, then point the mixer to the recorder.

Providing a software remote for the recorder would not be a problem,

but yes, what we're missing here is the equivalent of a multitrack tape machine, and the iPad is basically the meterbridge rather than the mixing console itself.

Cannot record. DL1608, have routed Main L Pre-Fader and Main R-Pre-Fader to IPad L and Ipad R. I see the Record-Button, push it and nothing happens. Hmmm? Any thoughts?
        Thanks a lot.

I think some of the DL1608 users need to relax a bit. Expecting this device in it's present hardware configuration to act as a 16 track recorder is naive.
Do what I do and use whatever unused Aux sends to feed an external 8 track recorder (Prefader Record sends in effect) and hardwire additional mics to said recorder for other sources. This works great and I don't have to sacrifice the wireless use of an iPad during shows. Mackie should be commended for their innovation and dedication!!! They are constantly improving the usability and performance of this product line (DL Series), which means they are adding value to your original investment!!! I own an original Personus 16.4.2 and that company NO LONGER supports it!!! Sure, a 'virtual soundcheck' is nice but saving snapshots in the DL device gets you 98% there. Stop whining guys and consider how revolutionary the DL Series is. I've been a freelance audio tech for a few decades and this device has changed EVERYTHING. Sure, on large gigs I'm using a M7CL48, but Mackie's wireless software is BETTER than Yamaha's (al beit the Reverbs and Dynamics are certainly better on a Yamaha desk.....adding tens of $1000's in price).
Just look at how far we've come since 'Racks and Stacks' and huge, buggy analog consoles!!!
I say "Hats off to Mackie!!!" Job Well Done!! And for Ben O and the development team and marketing team, I echo that appreciation!!

Beno we know it's not available for the dl1608. But then why did you post that here! That's the point. What a shyster company. And say completed. It's not. Why...because it can't be done. So remove the completed part. And stick with the "it can't be done". Low class of you and your marketing department. Especially emailing dl1608 owners saying its completed. This whole section is how can we improve the dl1608. And this certainly is not something that was done.

What a bad joke this is... The request was not for a new product, but for the DL1608...
So Beno, don't say this request is completed. It's just not true.

My goodness, when will require the smart that the DL1608 coffee can cook? Remains realistic times !!! It sucks!

      • Larz HansonLarz Hanson commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Mackie folks have said from the start that the DL1608 was incapable of multi-channel recording. It's a hardware limitation. Technology is tied to timing, and the DL1608 was one of the first of its kind, designed under iOS4 architecture. Manufacturers constantly leapfrog each other in designs. Now it's Mackie's turn again. Whether you see it as Mackie arriving first at the party before the fun gets going, or arriving late with hot chicks and a cooler full of beer, it's just a timing thing and they've worked hard to make the original 1608 more useful and easy to use than many current designs. As for the DL32R, it's come to the party with a Viagra in its pocket...

So MACKIE today sends out an email about this being completed. Full of sh. It was not completed. At least not with the dl1608. It is in the new dl32. Has nothing to do with these user voice issues dealing with the dl1608. Another piece of crappy advertising by Mackie.

      • Lou JudsonLou Judson commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

That is a cheat! The request was for multi on the DL 1608, not buyng a whole new system! I've replaced my Mackie with an Allen & Heath Qu anyway, which does all I want, so may be selling the DL soon... Obviously it is a hardware limitation...

@Reshef I answered this in October 2012, only one month after the product shipped. I'm sorry you didn't see that but if you scroll back, it is there.
No the hardware cannot support more than 2 channels of recording and playback to the iPad.

        Dear Ben,

The DL32R seems like an awesome mixer, but... it's a whole different hardware.
The title of this discussion is "How can we improve DL1608".

So I humbly ask again - Can you improve the DL1608 so it will support 16 channel recording and playback?

Can we, your loyal customers, once and for all get a straight honest answer?

How hard is it to just answer either:

        - Yes, the hardware support it, the software... not yet.."
        or
        - No, we planned the hardware to support only 2 channels. don't wast your time"

        Thanks.

      • benoAdminbeno (Admin, Mackie) commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

The DL32R supports 24x24 direct to a connected USB2 hard drive. There is no computer needed. The recording time is simply limited by the size of the hard drive you connect.

      • Anonymous commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Question for the admin: I see sound check recording and playback, but I'd like a little more detail. Is it possible to record all 32 tracks? What does "direct to disk" mean, exactly. What is the medium for the disk? And what is the overall recording capacity in terms of hours? Thank you.

      • Spark-StudioSpark-Studio commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Yet, does anyone have a definite answer to the question whether it's the hardware that can't multitrack record or just the MasterFader software?
There are several DAW Apps that support multitrack recording.
I figured I can control the DL1608 with a wireless iPad while a second, wired iPad, uses the DL1608 as an audio interface. the big question is - can the DL1608 deliver individual tracks via the USB interface?

I've already checked Cubasis with no success and now considering a test on Presonus' Capture for iPad.

        Any comments? :-)

Hopefully the new 32 channel one (being announced 10/15) will have multi-track recording (or streaming to computer) ability!!! If not, I am going to cry, punch someone, and/or slam my head against a brick wall until they fix this....

just buy a DL1608 and are very satisfied with its sound and ease of use, as has been discussed that could be great multitrack recording, hopefully Mackie surprised us with this console.

      • slapperslapper commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

Even just the 16 channels post a-d sent to the LAN would be useful.
That opens the door for 16 channel recording + network based monitoring duities.
